Firewise USA: The Gateway to Protecting your Home

Firewise USA™ is a a program sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, US Department of Interior, and the National Association of State Foresters. It is administered by the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA®.)

  • Educational. Please open the Home Hardening Link to the right for more information!
  • An indication of commitment to the wildfire preparedness process
    • The US Forest Service (USFS) Good Neighbor Program. The USFS committed to do the work behind Ruby Ranch in the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area because we had shown commitment to do our part with our Firewise USA™ recognition.
    • Insurance companies know that you are in a community that is making an effort.
  • A way of letting people know your community cares. In current conditions, we have had real estate agents tell us that their clients are looking for homes in a Firewise USA™ neighborhood.
  • A national program that is administered by National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA®) and locally by the Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS). It is sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, US Department of Interior, and the National Association of State Foresters.

Firewise USA™ recognition does not "certify that our community has lower fire risk."  Firewise USA™ means that our community is doing all we can to educate ourselves, work together, and reduce risk.

Firewise USA™ guiding documents and the Summit County Wildfire Protection Plan provided us with a framework to organize our efforts to reduce wildfire risk.  Our Firewise USA™ certification  improves our insurability as pressures mount on homeowners to prove they are doing their part to lower risk.

Our certification renews annually.  Please send your fire risk reducing home project lists and pictures to Lisa Lewis.
