WILDFIRE AND STEWARDSHIP UPDATES - NOV 2, 2026
Please maintain your 0-5’ zone! As Fire Chief Matt Benedict from Red, White, and Blue says, “We are not out of fire danger until snow accumulates.”
o The 6th anniversary of the East Troublesome fire that extended from Kremmling to Granby was October 14th. The East Troublesome Fire is the 2nd largest fire in the history of Colorado, burning roughly 194,00 acres. This fire was not considered contained until the end of November.
o Vail/Eagle County just had a fire yesterday - November 1! The “Bighorn Fire” in Vail was immediately contained, but a powerful reminder that wildfire season is not over. While things are cooling down nicely and we are getting some moisture, we must remain vigilant.
California is reporting that there are insurance companies who are refusing to pay out on policies because the “legal owner of the home” - a trust, partnership, or other entity, is not listed on the policy. If your home is held in an entity – please make sure the entity is named on your policy.
Our Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) is starting to take shape! Please plan to participate! It will take ALL of US! Our CWPP is supported by key state, local and federal agencies who are already helping us shape our plan for our neighborhood. Come learn first-hand what our county agencies do when a wildfire hits; and how we can do our part! Please help us create Ruby Ranch best practices to protect our homes, our infrastructure, and our safety.
Among those who have already agreed to help our planning are:
o Summit County Wildfire Council
o Colorado State Forest Service Local and District Offices
o Summit County Office of Emergency Management
o Summit Fire and EMS
o Breckenridge Red, White, and Blue Fire Department
o US Forest Service
And we have neighboring communities who also want be part of our planning effort including:
o Summit Sky
o Hamilton Creek
We will send out meeting dates and our first survey to collect your thoughts soon! We want to make sure we address your concerns in our plan.
Finally, we are happy to announce new volunteers toward our stewardship efforts: Becky Tomasek (overall planning and execution for CWPP and Stewardship Activities) and Becky Richmond (High Country Conservation Community Representative and Stewardship Activity Assistance.) Thank you, both Becky's!
