Flashing yellow and blue lights

We have seen the flashing yellow and blue lights on top of our road maintenance equipment.

Colorado law (C.R.S. 42-4-214) states that yellow and blue flashing lights on top of our road equipment indicates an official snowplow or ice-removal vehicle is actively performing winter maintence. Blue lights improve visibility during snowstorms.

What do the blue flashing lights mean?

  • Extreme hazard: heavy public works vehicle is plowing or sanding the road.
  • Low visibility: Blue lights improve visibility in hevy blowing snow, fog, and darkness.
  • Stay a safe distance.
  • During this time, our operators may need to suddenly cross over the middle of the road or shift unexpectedly around road edges; or may be using a wide blade or extended side wings ( if using a grader). Stay back.

CDOT (Colorado Department of Transportation )) provides an excellent website on safe driving in snow. We have linked it below.
